High levels of genetic differentiation of Oryza officinalis Wall. ex Watt. from China

Article Abstract:

An endangered tropical and subtropical species, allozyme diversity encoded by 24 loci was analysedto determine the population genetic structure of wild rice, Oryza officinalis Wall. ex Watt. findings indicate that the high genetic differentation among populations within a geographically limited region may stem into a consequent genetic drift.

Structural diversity and evolution of the Rf-1 locus in the genus Oryza

Article Abstract:

The genomic structure of the Rf-1 locus in the genus Oryza (rice) is analyzed to clarify its structural diversity and evolution. It is suggested that the ancestor of the Rf-1 gene may have duplicated early in rice evolution, and subsequent recombination may have resulted in the present diversified structure of the Rf-1 locus.

Challenges: Bioengineering nitrogen acquisition in rice: can novel initiatives in rice genomics and physiology contribute to global food security?

Article Abstract:

Rice provides staple food for 70% of world's human population and its increased global production has enabled crop scientist and farmers to starve off anticipated farming. The promise of modern technology in the area of nitrogen acquisition in rice is discussed.
