Heterochromatin-many flavors, common themes

Article Abstract:

Heterochromatin remains condensed throughout the cell cycle and can be of constitutive (permanent) or facultative (developmentally regulated). Information of how heterochromatin is assembled is gained by studying the formation of facultative heterochromatin and it is discovered that there are many architectural plans for building of heterochromatin.

The paradox of functional heterochromatin

Article Abstract:

Heterochromatin is regarded as genetically inactive chromosome regions in almost all organisms. In genetic and genomic studies in Drosophila melanogaster it is however found that transcriptionally active domains are present within constitutive heterochromatin.

The ovotestis: An underdeveloped organ of evolution

Article Abstract:

Some possible effects of the ovotestis on evolution are considered. The effects hypothesized that the accumulated mutation frequency of nuclear genes in hermaphrodites may reach twice that compared with gonochorists.
