Hereditary lactate dehydrogenase A-subunit deficiency as cause of early postimplantation death of homozygotes in Mus musculus

Article Abstract:

Lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) mouse mutants constructed bychemical and radiation mutagenesis were studied. Heterozygous LDH mutations which affected the Ldh-1 structural locus or an LDH subunit coding region did not result into any detectable physiological defects. However, all homozygous mutations, regardless of their individual natures, were lethal at an early postimplantation stage of embryonic development. This may be due to a block in glycolysis resulting in the loss of metabolic energy.

Does sex of the offspring influence transmission ratio?

Article Abstract:

Data from a set of four backcrosses of C57BL/6J mice and F1 hybrids from crosses with linkage stocks were analyzed to determine the role of sex in transmission ratio distortion (TRD). The results showed that a locus or loci in chromosome 2 is involved in TRD of a region of that chromosome. However, the data was insufficient to provide conclusions about the role of sex in influencing transmission ratio. A larger sample size is recommended for a more conclusive result.

Mus spretus LINE-1 sequences detected in the Mus musculus inbred strain C57BL 6J using LINE-1 DNA probes

Article Abstract:

The relationship between Mus musculus and Mus spretus complexes in the mouse is investigated by the analysis of the repetitive sequence LINE-1. The LINE-1 is analyzed by genomic southern blot hybridization and direct sequence analysis. The analysis reveals the presence of the LINE-1 elements in C57BL 6J, the unbred mouse strain. This indicates that some constituents of the genome C57BL 6J are obtained from the Mus spretus.
