Hedgehog controls limb development by regulating the activities of distinct transcriptional activator and repressor forms of cubitus interruptus

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to determine the specific functions of the Hedgehog (Hh) family of secreted proteins. Results indicate that the Hh proteins control Drosophila Gli homolog's Cubitus interruptus (Ci). Hh proteins were observed to negatively regulate the formation of a repressor form of Ci. Furthermore, Hh signalling strictly controls the generation of an activator form of Ci. Thus. Hedgehog proteins are found to be primary regulators of limb development in Drosophila.

Wntless, a conserved membrane protein dedicated to the secretion of Wnt proteins from signaling cells

Article Abstract:

A novel Wnt pathway component, Wntless (Wls/Evl), is discovered. Wls is required for wingless-dependent patterning processes in Drosophila, for MOM-2-governed polarization of blastomeres in Caenorhabditis elegans, and for Wnt3a-mediated communication between cultured human cells where it is dedicated to the secretion of Wnt proteins from signaling cells.

dMyc transforms cells into super competitors

Article Abstract:

An increase in the dMyc expression causes cells to behave as 'super-competitors'. Studies conducted on drosophila imaginal discs reveal that cells with lower levels of dMyc are eliminated whereas cells with higher levels of dMyc over-proliferate.
