Heat susceptibility of aquatic mycobacteria

Article Abstract:

The heat susceptibilities of different opportunistic mycobacteria frequently isolated from water was measured. Survivor measurements were taken at 50, 55, 60 and 70 degrees celsius. The results showed that Mycobacterium kansasii is the most thermosensitive of the mycobacteria studied, followed by Legionella pneumophila Mycobacterium fortuitum, M. intracellulare and M. marinum are similar to L. pneumophila, while M. avium, M. chelonae, M. phlei, M. scrofulaceum and M. xenopi are more thermotolerant than L. pneumophila. Therefore thermal measures against L. pneumophila will not be effective against the last five species.

Relationship between bacterial counts and endotoxin concentrations in the air of wastewater treatment plants

Article Abstract:

Bacterial counts on selective and nonselective media and direct counts using epifluorescence microscopy were determined to study the relationship between bacterial counts and endotoxin concentrations in the air of wastewater treatment plants. The results showed that bacterial counts on selective media like eosin methylene blue agar was a good predictor of endotoxin levels. Nonselective media did not yield good correlations between bacterial counts andendotoxin levels. Epifluoresce microscopy produced the highest counts, but did not correlate well with airborne endotoxin levels.

Cometabolic transformation and cleavage of nitrodiphenylamines by three newly isolated sulfate-reducing bacterial strains

Article Abstract:

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyses are carried out to study the cometabolic transformation and cleavage of three newly isolated sulfate-reducing bacterial strains. Results show that the strains cometabolically reduce nitrodiphenylamines to the corresponding aminodiphenylamines during anaerobic oxidation of the growth substrate lactate. This process also leads to the formation of heterocyclic condensation products.
