Head spot and dilute mutations in the Norway rat

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to describe a mutant allele of a new white spotting locus in the Norway rat, which is named as head spot (hs). The allele was recessive to normal, its expression was regularly manifested and had the form of a white spot of variable size in the middle of the forehead above the eyes. The study also reported a probable reoccurrence of blue dilution coat color. Findings indicated that the hs is independent of the dilute, agouti and hooded loci.

Parentage and kinship studies in an obligate brood parasitic bird, the brown-headed cowbird (Molothrus ater), using microsatellite DNA markers

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to analyze the usability of microsatellite DNA markers to measure parentage in the brood parasitic bird, the brown-headed cowbird Molothrus ater. A microsatellite-enriched genomic library was determined from brown-headed cowbird DNA. The allelic variability and heterozygosity of five cowbird loci and two yellow warbler were also analyzed. Results indicated the effectiveness of the marker set in carrying out parentage studies of cowbirds.

Heterochromatic DNA evolution in Phyllotine rodents: restriction enzyme bands

Article Abstract:

Phyllotis xanthopygus subspecies with variant genome size and constitutive heterochromatin amount were examined. The tests focused on Hae III and Hin dIII restriction enzyme recognition sites. Subspecies differences were partially attributed to Hae III recognition site variations. Hae III target sites also exhibited an effect on genome sequence and behavior for phyllotine rodents.
