Article Abstract:
Henrietta Lacks was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 1951and a biopsy specimen was sent to Tissue Culture Research Laboratory at John Hopkins Hospital. At this laboratory it was first discovered that Lacks's cells remained alive in a nutrient solution of chicken plasma and divided rapidly (designated as HeLa cells) and the research on these cells led to development of Jonas Salk's killed virus polio vaccine and also provided the living context for many discoveries about cancer genetics and tumor viruses, resulting in an immortalized life for Lacks.
