Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to analyze the cellular rRNA content of a coastal Synechococcus isolate growing at a range of light-limited growth rates Fluorescently labeled 16S rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes were used in the analysis while nucleic acid stain SYBR Green II was used for the measurement of total RNA. Flow cytometry was also used for a rapid analysis of stained and hybridized cells. Results indicate that calculations of cellular rRNA content can prove useful for the measurement of in situ growth rates in natural Synechococcus populations in mixed microbial communities.

Article Abstract:
The study details spatial and seasonal variability in the composition of nitrogen-fixing and cyanobacterial functional groups of benthic, hypersaline microbial mat from Salt Pond, San Salvador Island, Bahamas. Composition of the nitrogen-fixing community showed significant seasonal changes related to salinity while cyanobacterial composition showed no consistent seasonal pattern and spatial change suggests that cyanobacterial composition was more insensitive to water stress.

Article Abstract:
A plating method is proposed for obtaining isolated colonies of Synechococcus sp. strains WH7803, WH8102 and WH8103 at high efficiencies. The method uses a very low concentration of washed agar and allows discrimination between motile and nonmotile colonies. It is complemented by a technique for introducing a replicative vector and a suicide vector in the Synechococcus strains.
