Growth competition between Halobacterium salinarium strain PHH1 and mutants affected in gas vesicle synthesis

Article Abstract:

Growth competition between Halobacterium salinarium strain PHH1 (Gv+) and defective mutants affected in gas vesicle production was described to examine the role of the buoyancy provided by gas vesicles. Defective mutants produced fewer gas vesicles than the Gv+ strain in corresponding stages of growth which is much lower in shaken culture and negligible in static culture. Observations suggest that maintenance of cells at the more aerated brine surfaces is the function of buoyancy in halobacteria.

Population biology of Streptococcus pneumoniae isolated from oropharyngeal carriage and invasive disease

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted on a population of Streptococcus pneumoniae to understand infectivity and serotype stability. The data from multilocus restriction typing analysis indicate that frequency and invasiveness of pneumococci are linked, and serotype switching was exhibited among 14% of restriction types analyzed.

Allele-specificPCR shows that genetic exchange occurs among genetically diverse Nodularia (Cyanobacteria) filaments in the Baltic sea

Article Abstract:

Research demonstrates occurrence of genetic exchange in natural populations of cyanobacterial species Nodularia but less frequently as revealed by an analysis of three polymorphic loci with regard to their linkage and index association criteria.
