Article Abstract:
The effect of glycerol in mitochondrial citrate oxidation by Aspergillus niger was investigated. Mycelia of A. niger incubated with 0.5 molar glycerol increased intracellular glycerol pool level to 0.92 molar but had no effect on citrate uptake or carbon dioxide (CO2) release by the mycelia. Mitochondria preloaded with glycerol showed no significant increase in rate of CO2 release from mitochondria not loaded with glycerol. Loading with glycerol also had no effect on NADP-specific isocitrate dehydrogenase activity. These results suggest that glycerol neither stimulates nor inhibits citric acid accumulation by A. niger.

Article Abstract:
Active glycerol uptake in yeasts is discussed. This is apparently a mechanism underlying halotolerance based on a study of 42 species to look at growth in the presence of high NaCl concentration and characteristics of glycerol uptake. The high halotolerance helps to maintain a favorable intracellular concentration of glycrol. Higher salt-stress resistance indicates this may be an evolutionary advantage for growth in a given set of conditions.

Article Abstract:
The mechanism of action and the target site of mycobacillin on the cell wall of Aspergillus niger were investigated using resistant and sensitive strains. Results indicate that mycobacillin inhibits A. niger by promoting extrusion of ATP and starving the cell of energy. A lipid-protein region on the cell membrane is postulated to be the site of action of mycobacillin. Mycobacillin is a wide spectrum peptide antibiotic.
