Giving German universities a boost

Article Abstract:

Efforts to rejuvenate the German university system which include a competition to confer elite status on the country's ten leading universities are described. The aim of the initiative, called the 'Exzellenziniative' is to raise Germany's international competitiveness in science and broaden the spectrum of science and arts-from physics to philosophy.

Proteasome-mediated degradation of p21 via N-terminal ubiquitinylation

Article Abstract:

Results indicate that the site of ubiquitinylation of the negative regulator of the cell division cycle and kinase inhibitor, p21, is the free amino group of methionine at the N-terminus. Data show that ubiquitin pathway regulates proteasomal degradation of p21 and that lysine residues are not essential for p21 ubiquitinylation.

O-GlcNAc modification is an endogenous inhibitor of the proteasome

Article Abstract:

Research shows that the O-GlcNAc modification of 26S proteasome by O-GlcNAc transferase perhaps aid the organism respond to its metabolic needs by controlling the availability of amino acids and regulatory proteins. Data indicate that the proteasome modification inhibits the proteolysis of the transcription factor Sp1.
