Geographical structure and host specificity in bacteria and the implications for tracing the source of coliform contamination

Article Abstract:

Host specificity and geographical structure in bacteria are discussed in this minireview article with consideration of implications for tracing coliform-contamination sources. It may be that PCR-based detection of virulence factors would give better indication of the potential health significance of coliforms in the environment. It might be better for tracing sources of contamination in the environment. Topics include E. coli. genetic structure and virulence factors, sampling considerations, temporal variation in populations, whether Escherichia coli is the right coliform to look at, and primary vs secondary habitats.

An immunodominant membrane protein gene from the Western X-disease phytoplasma is ditinct from those of other phytoplasmas

Article Abstract:

Research describes purification of a 32 kilodalton immunodominant protein (IDP) from the Western X-disease phytoplasma. Nucleotide base pair analysis identifies a 864 base pair fragment whose amino acid sequence show no homology with other phytoplasma IDP genes but the encoded protein recognizes the native Western X-disease phytoplasma proteins.

The causes of Pseudomonas diversity are discussed in this review article which emphasizes ecologically significant variation. The ultimate source of with diversity is mutation, with ecological and genetic factors interacting. The organism is clearly highly adaptable in genetic and physiological terms.
