Article Abstract:
Apetalous male sterile flowers and altered flower development are the result of spontaneous mutation in Glycine max (soybean). The phenotype observed in soybeans bears similarity to homeotic gene mutations in Arabidopsis and Antirrhinum. Phenotype characterization is presented and the sterility of the male gamete was found to be caused by tapetum malfunction. No linkages were observed in the mutation mapped to a recessive nuclear gene.

Fluorescence and light microscopic techniques were performed to determine the inheritance, allelism and cytology of Calland sterile (TC) gene using tissue culture-derived male-sterile, female-sterile mutants as test cases. Microscopic observations during microsporogenesis revealed hollow-core nucleoli in sporogenous mass cells as well as lagging chromosomes and unequal chromosome segregation, resulting to numerically and genetically unbalanced microspore nuclei. The findings thus indicated that the sterility in Calland TC can be due to desynapsis.
