Article Abstract:
Patterns of molecular evolution and population substructure were found among four congeneric fur seals. Low levels of sequence diversity and reciprocal paraphyly were observed from combined samples of Subantarctic and Antarctic species. Australian and Cape fur seal subspecies exhibited low levels of sequence diversity but showed significant differences in the regional distribution of halotypes. High levels of average sequence diversity was observed in New Zealand fur seals.

The study presents a comprehensive and validate mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) reference database of control region and cytochrome b sequences for beaked whales. Based on the experience with this family and the other Cetacea, as a whole, molecular taxonomy should consider components such as comprehensiveness, validation, locus sensitivity, genetic distinctiveness and exclusivity, concordance, and universal accessibility.
