Genetic variation at minisatellite DNA loci among North Pacific populations of steelhead and rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

Article Abstract:

A study conducted on genetic variation among rainbow and steelhead trout of the northeast Pacific Ocean using variable number tandem repeat DNA markers shows that average heterozygosity in the Ssa1 locus is 61% while that in the T34 locus is 80%. The Ssa1 locus contained 18 alleles and the T34 locus had 26 alleles. In the Ssa1 locus 58% of all the alleles found were due to one allele while in the T34 locus 72% of the alleles were due to three alleles. The frequency of the alleles was constant in populations from the same place through the years while in populations from different areas it varied.
