Research on monozygotic twins is presented, with the purpose of assessing age-related changes by analyzing physical growth and running performance. Issues discussed include the genetic components involved in running skills, specifically performances in endurance; and the possible genotype contributions effecting the growth of children over a period of time.

Article Abstract:
A possible genetic effect has been found for age-related changes in endurance run performance and physical growth during adolescence, but not for performance on the 50-m dash, according to results of a longitudinal twin study in Japan. Participants included 14 pairs of male and 25 pairs of female monozygotic twins and 19 pairs of male and 15 pairs of female dizygotic twins. Yearly measurements were taken from 12-17 years of age of performance on the 50-m dash and endurance run, as well as of stature and body mass.

Article Abstract:
A 5-year longitudinal cohort study of the running development of Japanese adolescents was conducted to investigate changes in the pattern of development over time. The test items were an endurance run and a dash. The students entered the first grade between 1968 and 1989 at the age of 12 years and were followed for the next 5 years. Secular changes among boys were minimum, but secular changes in physical growth of girls could not explain the secular changes in running development, which may suggest underlying causes such as social and cultural.
