Variation in tolerance and virulence in the chestnut blight fungus-hypovirus interaction

Article Abstract:

There is a wide genetic variation in hypovirus virulence and fungus tolerance in the chestnut blight fungus Cryphonectria parasitica. However, the magnitude of the tolerance is relatively small, indicating that the hypovirus will still be a useful biological control agent for the fungus.

Genetic similarity of flag shoot and ascopore subpopulations of Erysiphe necator in Italy

Article Abstract:

The correlation between distinct genetic groups (I and III) identified previously in Erysiphe necator and overwintering modes in two vineyards in Tuscany, Italy, is investigated to determine whether diagnostic genetic markers could be used to predict overwintering. The results do not support a strong correlation between overwintering and genetic groups, which highlights the need to base population biology studies on sound biological and epidemiological knowledge.

Genetics of vegetative incompatibility in Cryphonectria parasitica

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the genetics of vegetative incompatibility in Cryphonectria parasitica. The goals were to determine the number of polymorphic vic loci in C. parasitica populations in Europe, to identify all possible vic genotypes and to determine the genotypes of vegetative compatibility (vc) types used in other genetic studies. Results confirm that vegetative incompatibility is controlled by allelic interactions.
