Article Abstract:
Eight human-specific Alu insertion polymorphisms are typed in 106 unrelated healthy individuals born in the province of Valencia (Spain), with the aim of analyzing the genetic relationships between this region of the Iberian Peninsula and other Mediterranean populations. Results generated from Alu reveals that the Mediterranean has acted as a strong genetic boundary between the north (Europe) and the south (Northern Africa), resulting in significant gene diversity between the populations of two regions.

Article Abstract:
Allelic frequencies of four Alu polymorphic loci of individuals from six different African-derived populations (quilombo remnants) in Ribeira River Valley, Sao Paolo State, Brazil were studied and compared with the allelic frequencies of individuals from Sao Paolo city for determining the genetic relationships between quilombos and other populations. The results show that the quilombos exhibited a higher degree of gene flow than average as compared to the African, Amerindian and European populations.
