Genetic manipulation of Prochlorococcus strain MIT9313: Green fluorescent protein expression from an RSF1010 plasmid and Tn5 transposition

Article Abstract:

Different conditions are described for the transfer of plasmid DNA into Prochlorococcus strain MIT9313 by interspecific conjugation with Escherichia coli, which have shown that an RSF1010-derived plasmid will replicate in Prochlorococcus strain MIT9313. The conjugation methods are applied to show that a mini-Tn5 transposon would transpose in vivo in Prochlorococcus and these genetic advances have provided a basis for future genetic studies with Prochlorococcus, a microbe of ecological importance in world's oceans.

Fungal community analysis by large-scale sequencing of environmental samples

Article Abstract:

Fungi are an important and diverse component of soil communities, but these communities have proven difficult in conventional biotic surveys. In a temperate forest, the soil fungal density at two sites is evaluated using direct isolation of small-subunit and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rRNA genes by PCR and high-throughput sequencing of cloned fragments.

Characterization of Azo reduction activity in a novel ascomycete yeast strain

Article Abstract:

The decolorization activity of a novel ascomycete yeast strain, Issatchenkia occidentalis and the influence of different parameters on the performance of Issatchenkia occidentalis as an azo dye reducer is examined. Results indicate that Issatchenkia occidentalis has azo dye reduction capacity.
