Article Abstract:
The maltose phosphorylase (MP) gene, MaIPGenetic, and its localization and regulation in Lactococcus lactis have been studied. An effect of glucose on MP expression was shown by carrying out fermentations in the presence of maltose and glucose. The genetic locus of the MP gene was in the area of the region that encodes a possible regulator in the Lacl-GalR family of transcriptional regulators. Different genetic loci for the genes that encode MP and beta-phosphoglucomutase account for the different gene regulation behavior.

Article Abstract:
The gene rfbA gene that encodes the alpha-D-glucose-1-phosphate thymidylyltransferase (RfbA) of Mycobacterium tuberculosis was analyzed to determine the genetic mechanisms that mediate the biosynthesis of rhamnose. Analysis of rfbA gene sequence indicated the presence of an ATG start codon with a 31362 Da putative protein product that was similar to other microbial RfbA proteins. Furthermore, other rfbA genes required for rhamnose biosynthesis was not detected during the sequencing of DNA surrounding the rfbA gene.

Article Abstract:
The biochemical characteristics and molecular structure of the gene encoding beta-phoshoglucomusate (beta-PGM) which mediates maltose metabolism was analyzed in Lactococcus lactis. Analysis of pgmB gene from the Lactococcus lactis genomic library indicated the presence of a 24210 Da polypeptide that was expressed by the beta-PGM gene. Furthermore, the expression of pgmB gene in Lactococcus lactis was inhibited by the presence of lactose.
