Balanced vs. slightly unbalanced selection

Article Abstract:

Balanced selection has been compared with two degrees of slightly unbalanced selection and with unrestricted selection looking at the retrieved response and genetic diversity consumed over 30 generation of selection. Results indicate a slight imbalance can bring favorable results for retrieved response vs genetic diversity vs balanced selection at low and moderate heritabilities and with small families and population size givens. Balanced selection, when all parents have equal contributions to the next generation, is thought to minimize loss of gene diversity and allow a steady increase of selection response.

Inbreeding depression in the wild

Article Abstract:

Inbreeding depression in the wild is discussed. Estimates of inbreeding depression from the literature, with bird, mammal, poikilotherm and plant species included, have been corrected by dividing by the coefficient of inbreeding to take into consideration the influence variation in F will have, and 169 estimates of inbreeding depression for 137 traits were found. Importance of inbreeding depression for wild populations depends both on magnitude of the effect and on likelihood of inbreeding.
