Genetic analysis of fumonisin production and virulence of Gibberella fujikuroi mating population A (Fusarium moniliforme) on maize (Zea mays) seedlings

Article Abstract:

Analysis of progeny of a cross made between a fum1+ field strain exhibiting high virulence and fum1- field strain exhibiting low virulence helps investigate the relationship between fumonisin production and virulence of Gibberella fujikuori mating population A on maize seedlings. Virulence level exhibits a correlation with fumonisin production. A rare fumonisin-nonproducing strains exhibiting high virulence is identified by a survey of field strains. Though production of fumonisin influences virulence, it is not essential for virulence on maize seedlings.

Production of fumonisin B1 and moniliformin by Gibberella fujikuroi from rice from various geographic areas

Article Abstract:

The fertility of a mating population D with Giberella fujikuroi strains isolated from rice in different geographic areas was analyzed to determine the natural occurrence of mycotoxin production. Fumonisin B was produced by 58% of the 59 Giberella fujikuroi strains isolated from rice in Asian countries and the US while moniliformin was produced by 42% of the strains that were cultured in autoclaved maize substrate. Furthermore, mating experiments between the Giberella fujikuroi strains and tester strains exhibited low fertility.

Fumonsin B(sub 1) production by Fusarium species other than F. moniliforme in section Liseola and by some related species

Article Abstract:

All of the Fusarium species in section Liseola as well as four recently described species were tested for the ability to produce fumonisin B(sub 1). The results showed that some strains of the species F. proliferatum, F. nygamai, F. anthophilum, F. dlamini, F. napiforme were able to produce fumonisin. The latter three species have never been reported to produce fumonisin before. Of the fumonisin producers, F. proliferatum, F. napiforme andF. nygamai are of the most significance because of their association with food grains.
