Genes without frontiers?

Article Abstract:

A study is conducted to investigate pUC18 as an example of an artificial vector and consider whether its homology to broad host-range antibiotic resistance transposons and plasmid origins of replication could enable the uptake of insert DNA. The disposal of recombinant DNA, its persistence in the environment and whether homologies to pIC18 may exist in naturally competent bacteria are described.

Is group selection necessary to explain social adaptations in microorganisms?

Article Abstract:

A model is used for simulating the evolution of breeding restrain, which is a form of altruism. The model simulates a system of consumers and hosts interacting over 100,000 generations within a grid of 250*250 cells, representing territories. The assumptions of the model are found to be unrealistic as the consumers are unable to move into or pass through cells occupied by other consumers.

Cycling selection for litter size in arctic foxes

Article Abstract:

Experiments proved that the variation in arctic fox number was mainly the result of variation in litter size determined primarily by polymorphism at a major gene. It is seen that conditions for polymorphism maintenance with dominance and cyclic fitness variation are quite restrictive and that the best genetic model to explain litter size in arctic foxes is one with a single major gene.
