Article Abstract:
Oxalate metabolism in the anaerobic bacteria Oxalobacter formigenes produces a proton motive force (Delta-p), of which the main component is the transmembrane electric potential (Delta-Psi). The values of Delta-Psi and pH gradient decrease with an increase in the extracellular pH. The production of Delta-Psi is suppressed by a K+ ionophore and a protonophore but is unaffected by a Na+ ionophore. This indicates that the energy produced by oxalate metabolism is stored as an Delta-Psi gradient rather than a Na+ gradient.

Article Abstract:
A test scheme for differentiating the different species of enterococci and fecal streptococci was developed. The scheme could be carried out using the API Rapid Strep panel or the MicroScan system panel, although additional tests like motility, pigmentation and sucrose utilization are recommended. Comparisons of results obtained using conventional identification procedures showed that the new test scheme is efficient, reproducible and non-labor- or -equipment-intensive.

Article Abstract:
The capability of KF streptcoccal broth and agar for enumerating species of enterococci and fecal streptococci in pork, beef and poultry products is discussed. Counts made from strains representing species of Streptococcus bovis and Streptococcus equinus by both selective media were compared. Equivalent plate counts were derived after innoculation. However, agar counts were consistently and significantly higher than KF broth counts.
