Geneflow and genetic diversity: a comparison of freshwater bryozoan populations in Europe and North America

Article Abstract:

A comparison of freshwater Cristatella mucedo populations in Europe and North America has been carried out. Data from three microsatellite loci and partial 16S rDNA mitochondrial sequences were used. Numerous, widely distributed divergent genetic lineages of North America were found using mitochondrial sequence data. They can be placed in two groups, categorizing broadly. Significantly different patterns in phylogeography and evolutionary history in Europe and North America were see. Patters can be linked to biodiversity at different spatial scales.

Simple allelic-phenotype diversity and differentiation statistics for allopolyploids

Article Abstract:

The use of a simple allelic-phenotype diversity statistic that measures diversity as the average number of alleles by which pairs of individuals differ and can be extended to a population differentiation measure ([F.sub.ST]), which is analogous to [F.sub.ST] is proposed. It illustrates the behavior of these statistics using coalescent computer simulations that show that [F.sub.ST] behaves in a qualitatively similar way to [F.sub.ST], thus providing a useful way to quantify population differentiation in allopolyploid species.

Selfish genetic elements and speciation

Article Abstract:

Speciation and selfish genetic elements (SGEs) are discussed. Importance of maternal effect dominant embryonic arrest (medea) genes, meiotic drive elements, transposable elements and the bacterium Wolbachia in creation of postzygotic isolation are evaluated. The role of selfish genetic elements in speciation has not been established.
