Article Abstract:
Most strains of Candida albicans were capable of high frequency phenotypic switching which involves the regulation of a number of diverse genes. Switch phenotypes were manifested at the single-cell level which was most pronounced in the switching system of C. albicans strain WO-1. This strain undergoes transition referred to as the white-opaque transition which results in a dramatic change in cellular phenotype. Different approaches were adopted to elucidate the switching mechanism and steps involved in reverse genetics approach were analysed.

Article Abstract:
A rabbit polyclonal antiserum was used to localize the Wh11 gene product in white budding cells in Candida albicans to determine the role of the gene product in switching. Candida albicans WO-1 cells switch often, spontaneously and reversibly between a white and opaque phase. Wh11 is found to be spread throughout the cytoplasm, but appears to be absent in vesicles, plasma membrane and nucleus. A correlation between the presence of a Wh11 homologue and round budding cell shape was also found in several C. albicans strains.

Article Abstract:
A study was conducting of DNA probes for effective fingerprinting of Candida glabrata. The DNA probes were cloned using a screen for complex genomic fragments containing moderately repetitive sequences. The probes are species-specific and the majority cross-hybridize to varying degrees. Moreover, the probes, which contain invariant sequences, can be employed in large computer-assisted epidemiological studies.
