Follicle cell regulation of amino acid uptake and polyphosphoinositide metabolism in oocytes of the limpet Patella vulgata

Article Abstract:

The effects of the follicle cells on the oocyte metabolism are either stimulatory or inhibitory depending on the maturity stage. In the immature oocyte the follicle cells induce a low level polyphosphoinositide turnover. During maturation these cells ensure maximum activation of the metabolism. Optimum transport of the amino acid leucine is possible in the presence of the follicle cells.

Okadaic acid accelerates germinal vesicle breakdown and overcomes cycloheximide- and 6-dimethylaminopurine block in cattle and pig oocytes

Article Abstract:

Release from the follicle results in spontaneous continuation of first meiotic division within 20 hrs for pig oocytes, and within 8 hrs for cattle oocytes. The activity of histone H1 kinase increases during maturation and reaches a peak in metaphase I in both cases. The treatment with okadaic acid enhances germinal vesicle breakdown (GVBD) and histone H1 kinase activation.
