Fluctuating asymmetry and canalization: an appraisal based on a-b ridge counts among Indian populations with diverse backgrounds

Article Abstract:

A study of 3,239 Indians does not confirm the hypothesis that there is a quadratic relationship between fluctuating symmetry of the a-b ridge count and its phenotypic value. In this case, fluctuating symmetry is defined as the absolute difference between the right and left a-b ridge counts. Only 13% of the samples supported this hypothesis.

Single nucleotide polymorphisms in alcohol dehydrogenase genes among some Indian populations

Article Abstract:

The Indian population shows presence of a polymorphic allele for alcohol dehydrogenase involved in the metabolism of ethanol to acetaldehyde. These alleles present in the noncoding region of the ADH genes are functionally correlated with a strong linkage disequilibrium (LD) block in all the populations.

Genetics of anthropometric asymmetry in an Indian endogamous population-Vaidyas

Article Abstract:

The genetics of fluctuating and directional anthropomorphic asymmetries (FA and DA) was studied in an endogamous population in West Bengal known as Vaidyas. The environmental seems to have substantial effect on the heritability of these traits in the community.
