First blood vessels in the avian neural tube are formed by a combination of dorsal angioblast immigration and ventral sprouting of endothelial cells

Article Abstract:

The early pattern of neural tube (NT) vascularization in the avian neural tube during the fourth day of development was investigated using 3-D reconstructions, confocal laser scanning microscopy and spatial statistics. Angioblastic cells were first detected in quail embryos at Hamburger and Hamilton (HH) stage 19. These cells invaded the NT at HH21 and developed the first perfused vessels of the NT at HH23. Vascularization proceeded from the caudal to the rhombencephalic NT.
