Fifty years with interferons

Article Abstract:

Research work related to interferon that could inhibit intracellular bacteria and tumorigenesis showed that it has several applications beyond virus inhibition such as treating Hepatitis C, and recombinant IFN-[beta] for treating relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis. The discovery of a family of interferon transcription factors in 1988 launched a long chain of research some of which were found to deal with innate and adaptive immune responses as well as with type I interferon gene activation.
