Article Abstract:
The reactions of fumonisin B1 during the ethanol fermentation of naturally contaminated corn was determined. The methodology involved comparing the end products from a control corn lot and two lots containing 15 and 34 parts per million of fumonisin B1. Results showed that only a small quantity of fumonisin B1 was degraded during fermentation, and most was recovered in the distillers' grains, thin stillage and soluble fractions. In addition, no toxins were present in the centrifuge solids or distilled alcohol. The study showed that ethanol fermentation is practical process for salvaging fumonisin-contaminated corn.

Ethanol production by genetically engineered Escherichia coli strains containing pet operon plasmids with mutations for pyruvate formate lyase and lactate dehydrogenase removes the need for supplying antibodies in the culture medium. However, it is necessary that the bacterial grows under anaerobic conditions. E. coli strain FMJ39 is transformed into E. coli FBR1 and FBR2 by introducing the pet operon plasmids pLOI295 and pLOI297. Both these strains grow under anaerobic conditions and show no pet plasmid losses even after 60 generations in serially transferred anaerobic batch cultures.

A research was conducted to investigate the isolation and molecular determination of spontaneous mutants of Escherichia coli KO11(pLOI1906) containing the Klebsiella oxytoca casAB operon which efficiently ferment cellobiose. p-nitrophenyl-beta-Delta-1,4-glucopyranoside was utilized to characterize the activity of the casAB phosphotransferase system and phospho-beta-glucoside cleavage enzyme. Moreover, ethanol production from cellobiose was studied using recombinant KO11 harboring either native pLOI1906 or a mutant plasmid with increased casAB expression.
