Article Abstract:
Iron water pipes have greater amounts of biofilm than polyvinyl chloride pipes, even when a disinfectant is used. Chlorination of the water led to increases in the number of gram-positive bacteria.

Many strains of Mycobacterium avium are resistant to disinfectants such as chlorine, monochloramine, chlorine dioxide, and ozone. This could explain their persistence in drinking water and municipal water systems.

Factors influencing numbers of Mycobacterium avium, Mycobacterium intracellulare, and other mycobacteria in drinking water distribution systems
Article Abstract:
Mycobacterium avium can grow in water distribution systems but water treatment can substantially reduce the number of bacteria in drinking water. Mycobacterium intracellulare was not recovered from water samples, but it does occur in biofilms.
