Extraneuronal roles of cyclin-dependent kinase 5

Article Abstract:

The possible mechanisms through which Cdk5 regulates differentiation, exocytosis, gene expression and transcription, cell-cell and cell-matrix adhesion, cell migration, tissue regeneration, senescence, apoptosis and hormone regulation in non-neuronal cells are discussed. A summary of the various non-neuronal cell types, cellular activities and genes or proteins affected by Cdk5 activity and a discussion of comparable events in neuronal cells are presented.

Sorting out Sox10 functions in neural crest development

Article Abstract:

The neural crest (NC) and its derivatives and also the roles for Sox10 in formation of neural crest cells (NCCs) themselves, maintenance of stem cell multipotency, specification of subset of NCC fates and differentiation of specific cell types are discussed. The experimental findings are explored and shown how the picture of Sox10 action in NC development might show more unity than proposed before.

A golden clue to human skin colour variation

Article Abstract:

Investigation of pigmentation phenotypes in model organisms provides route to identify the genes and showed MC1R to be one key locus. The study identifies the human orthologue, SLC24A5, as likely to make a major contribution to the pale skin colouration of Western Europeans.
