Extensive genetic diversity among clinical isolates of Streptococcus pyogenes serotype M5

Article Abstract:

Streptococcus pyogenes group A streptococci (GAS) have several virulence factors, the best known of which is the M protein. The emm gene encoding M protein is amplified by PCR with conserved primers and several emm gene sequences have been established. The genetic diversity of randomly selected clinical isolates of serotype M5, linked to a wide range of GAS diseases, was examined, and strain phylogenies were analyzed. Nucleotide sequencing of the 5' end of the gene was used to investigate polymorphism of the emm gene, and a high degree of genetic diversity in serotype M5 was observed.

Streptococcus pyogenes protein F promotes invasion of HeLa cells

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the bacterial components involved in host-cell invasion by virulent Streptococcus pyogenes using transposon mutagenesis. Results indicated that less invasive mutants had decreased expression of protein F on their surface compared with the parental strain. Findings also demonstrated that protein F is an essential component of S pyogenes necessary for the invasion of cultured epithelial cells.

Mitogenic factor (MF) is the major DNase of serotype M89 Streptococcus pyrogenes

Article Abstract:

Results show that disruption of the gene encoding the mitogenic factor MF does not affect growth or virulence but affects DNase production and activity in Streptococcal pyrogenes indicating that mf gene codes for DNase B.
