Article Abstract:
The ionizing-radiation-resistant fractions of two soil bacterial communities were investigated by exposing an arid soil from the Sonoran Desert and a nonarid soil from a Louisiana forest to various doses of ionizing radiation using a (super 60)Co source. The diverse group of bacterial strains isolated from the arid soil sample included 60 Deinococcus strains, the characterization of which revealed nine novel species of this genus.

Article Abstract:
Groundwater samples from six different boreholes located in two geographical areas were examined for the presence of legionellae over a 7-year period. The groundwaters investigated are used without any disinfection procedure, as water supplies in spas for therapeutic purposes, so that persistence of Legionella spp. is certainly cause for concern for the spa officials and public health authorities.

Article Abstract:
Two species of a novel genus whose closest taxonomically defined relatives are the unculturable species of the genus Rickettsiella are represented. Strain SGT-39 represents a new species of a novel genus for which the name Aquicella lusitana is proposed, while strain SGT-108 represents a second species of the same novel genus, for which the name Aquicella siphonis is proposed.
