The Bacillus subtilis spoIVB gene can be transcribed by E(sigma)(super F) and E(sigma)(super G), contrary to previous studies which imply exclusive control by E(sigma)(super G). During sporulation, however, only E(sigma)(super G) directs substantial levels of spoIVB expression. A 'biphasic' pattern of expression such as found in other forespore-expressed genes is not observed for spoIVB. This led to the conclusion that spoIVB is not normally transcribed by E(sigma)(super F) during sporulation in wild-type cells, but a null mutation in the gene encoding E(sigma)(super G) allows the expression of spoIVB during the early stages of sporulation and this expression requires E(sigma)(super F).

Article Abstract:
Gene cloning and DNA sequencing were done to study the Bacillus subtilis sigma(super K) checkpoint which is a mechanism for fine-tuning gene expression and making sure that the activation of sigma(super K) as an important step in bacterial spore maturation proceeds as needed. The analyses identified a novel forespore-expressed gene, bofC, which is responsible for the expression of the protein involved in the regulation of the SpoIVB function. The bofC gene thus appeared to be involved in the fine-tuning of the sigma(super K) checkpoint.

Article Abstract:
The functional properties of the Bacillus subtilis ftsH gene were analyzed to determine the activity of the FtsH protein during osmotic stress and spore formation. Analysis of Bacillus subtilis ftsH gene in ftsH::spc mutants indicated the role of the gene in proteolytic activity, membrane assembly and attainment of cell density during the stationary phase of cell growth. Furthermore, the FtsH protein also mediated cellular response to osmotic stress and promoted spore formation in Bacillus subtilis.
