Expanding the known diversity and environmental distribution of an uncultured phylogenetic division of bacteria

Article Abstract:

Researchers have identified a new division-level candidate phylogenetic group of Bacteria in a contaminated aquifer. 16S rRNA sequences show at least 60 members of the group, which is called WS6. The genetic divergence is the largest of any known bacterial division.

New perspective on uncultured bacterial phylogenetic division OP11

Article Abstract:

Organisms of OP11 candidate phylogenetic division of bacteria are found in rRNA-based sequence surveys of environmental samples. Widespread environmental distribution of samples of bacterial divisions of OD1 OP11 shows potentially important biogeochemical roles for these organisms in their environments.

Unexpected diversity and complexity of the Guerrero Negro hypersaline microbial mat

Article Abstract:

Nucleic acid-based molecular methods, combined with estimates of biomass (ATP), pigments, and microelectrode measurements of chemical gradients, are applied to map microbial diversity vertically on a millimeter scale in a hypersaline microbial mat from Guerrero Negro, Baja California Sur, Mexico. The analysis has revealed unexpected diversity, complexity and structure within the mat.
