Article Abstract:
A minimal medium that does not require the branched-chain amino acid (BCAA) supplements is used to gain insight into how Listeria monocytogenes ensures its high content of anteiso-C(sub 15:0) fatty acid at low temperatures. The anteiso precursor preferences of enzymes in the branched-chain fatty acid biosynthesis pathway ensures a high production of anteiso fatty acids and the cold-regulated chain shortening results in a further increase of anteiso-C(sub 15:0) at the expense of anteiso-C(sub 17:0).

Article Abstract:
A time series phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) [.sup.13.C]-labeling study was initiated to find out methanotrophic taxon, calculate methanotrophic biomass, and assess carbon recycling in an upland brown earth soil from Bronydd Mawr. Laboratory incubations of soils were executed at ambient CH4 concentrations using synthetic air containing 2 parts per million of volume of [.sup.13.C]H4.

Article Abstract:
Listeria monocytogenes production of cold shock proteins (CSP) and cold acclimation species has been characterized. Two-dimensional gel electrophoresis was used for characterization. Data from mutants incapable of growing at low temperatures were obtained. Results did not indicate an obvious difference in the CSP profiles of the cold-sensitive mutant examined and its parent strain.
