Article Abstract:
The molecular and physiological mechanisms involved in the enhancement of solvent production by Clostridium beijerenckii BA101 are investigated. The specific activities and mRNA expression levels linked with coenzyme A transferase, acetoacetate decarboxylase and butyraldehyde dehydrogenase are elevated in hyper-solvent-producing Clostridium beijerinckii BA101 during the exponential growth phase. It is assumed that the increase in expression of the sol operon and associated enzyme functions may play a role in solvent production by Clostridium beijerinckii.

Article Abstract:
The metabolic consequences of a two-signal model for the shift in continuous culture are discussed. Various manipulations to induce solvent formation were used in the study. The internal concentration of acids was found to increase as acidity was lowered or various various organic acids or uncouplers are added. Levels of NAD(P)H in the cell increases due to the evolution of carbon monoxide, methyl viologen and iron limitation.

Article Abstract:
Factors influencing solvent production by Clostridium pasteurianum were identified using batch and continuous cultures. Results show that phosphate limitation results in conversion of glucose to acetate and butyrate independent of pH and growth rate. Iron limitation produces lactate while carbon monoxide addition leads to ethanol, lactate and butanol production. Culture pH appears to play no role in the process.
