Article Abstract:
The 5S ribosomal RNA (rRna) and 16S-like rRNA of several strains of deep-sea barophilic bacteria were analyzed to determine the phylogenetic relationships of the isolates. Phenotypic characterization of the rRNA of the barophilic deep-sea bacteria indicated the presence of strains belonging to several classes of gamma-Proteobacteria. Furthermore, the psychrophilic and barophilic heterotrophic bacterial isolates evolved independently into different genera such as Shewanella, Photobacterium and Moritella.

Article Abstract:
The bacteria found on the dorsal surfaces of the annelid Alvinella pompejana have been included in the epsilon subdivision of Proteobacteria. The bacteria obtained from the annelid were tested for the presence of 16S rRNA sequences and a difference was seen in only 4 of the 72 positions checked. The presence of these 16S rRNA sequences is characteristic of the epsilon subdivision. These bacteria probably help in the nutrition of the annelid or remove poisonous substances from animal's surroundings.

Article Abstract:
The proteins LcaC and LcaD may play a crucial role in the production of the antibacterial protein leucocin A produced by Leuconostoc gelidum UAL187. When inserting DNA into cells that did not normally produce leucocin A, the genes for LcaC and LcaD were necessary to stimulate the production of leucocin A. The genes for LcaC and LcaD were located upstream and on the opposite DNA strand from the stuctural gene for leucocin A.
