Evidence of intense archeal and bacterial methanotrophic activity in the Black Sea water column

Article Abstract:

The aerobic and anaerobic methanotrophic microbial communities in the seep-influenced and reference water columns in the Black Sea are characterized. The microbial community composition is related to methane concentrations and isotropic signatures in order to identify groups of microorganisms responsible for the removal of methane in the Black Sea water column.

Isolation of a multiheme protein with features of a hydrazine-oxidizing enzyme from an anearobic ammonium-oxidizing enrichment culture

Article Abstract:

A multiheme protein having hydrazine-oxidizing activity was purified from enriched culture from a reactor in which an anammox bacterium, strain KSU-1 was dominant is described. The findings suggest that purified enzyme might be a novel hydrazine-oxidizing enzyme having a critical role in anaerobic ammonium oxidation.

Cooccurrence of aerobic and anaerobic methane oxidation in the water column of Lake PluBsee

Article Abstract:

Dissolved methane is examined in the water column of eutropic Lake PluBsee and compared to temperature, oxygen and sulfide profiles. High cell numbers of aerobic and anaerobic methane-oxidizing microorganisms are detected by fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), respectively, in these layers.
