Evidence for balancing selection at the major histocompatibility complex in a free-living ruminant

Article Abstract:

Indications of selective maintenance of genetic diversity at the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) were studied in an unregulated population of Soay sheep on the island of Hirta, St. Kilda, Scotland. Markers within the MHC indicated high levels of linkage disequilibrium with each other but not with flanking markers. Hardy-Weinberg proportions were observed for all loci. However, two of the three markers within the MHC had relatively even allele frequency distributions that were not likely to have been due to neutrality and therefore suggest recent balancing selection.

Identification, inheritance, and linkage of B-G-like and MHC class I genes in cranes

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to identify B-G-like genes in the whooping and Florida sandhill cranes and associated them with the major histocompatibility complex (MHC). The inheritance of B-G-like genes were examined using restriction fragment patterns. A crane genomic DNA library was then screened with a chicken B-G cDNA clone. Results supported the concept of a long-term association of polymorphic B-G-like genes with MHC.
