Anaerobic naphthalene degradation by microbial pure cultures under nitrate-reducing conditions

Article Abstract:

Researchers describe the first known case of the anaerobic degradation of naphthalene by pure cultures isolated from a site contaminated by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). This shows that the microbial degradation of PAHs does not require oxygen.

Evidence for acetyl coenzymeA and cinnamoyl coenzyme A in the anaerobic toluene mineralization pathway in Azoarcus tolulyticus Tol-4

Article Abstract:

Anaerobic toluene metabolism has been described by a new bacterium, strain Tol-4. The strain was isolated from petroleum-contaminated aquifer sediment retrieved from northern Michigan. The complete stoichiometry of strain Tol-4 for toluene degradation under denitrifying conditions was detailed. Data indicated important modifications in the acetyl-CoA pathway of anaerobic toluene metabolism.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon degradation by a new marine bacterium, Neptunomonas naphthovorans gen. nov., sp. nov

Article Abstract:

The ability of two new marine bacteria strains to degrade polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) has been studied. The strains called, NAG-2N-216 and NAG-2N-113, have been isolated from creosote-contaminated Puget Sound sediment. Both strains degraded 1- and 2-methylnaphthalene when incubated with PAH compound in artificial seawater. NAG-2N-113 was also able to degrade 2,6-dimethylnaphthalene and phenanthrene. Acenaphthene was degraded by both strains when it is incubated with a mixture of seven other PAHs but not when it is used as a carbon source.
