Evaluation of the Staphylococcus aureus class C nonspecific acid phosphatase (sapS) as a reporter for gene expression and protein secretion in gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria

Article Abstract:

The Staphylococcus aureus class C nonspecific acid phosphatase (sapS) acid phosphatase is developed and used as a reported for characterizing the promoters and signal sequences in a gram-negative host, Escherichia coli, as well as in mesophilic and moderately thermophilic gram-positive hosts. The use of this reporter gene is evaluated in Bacillus halodurans, as it has the lac operon and the commonly used lacZ reporter system cannot be used in this host organism.

Stratified growth in Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms

Article Abstract:

Studies done to evaluate and apply fluorescent protein-based approaches for mapping spatial patterns of protein synthetic activity in Pseudomonas aeruginosa biofilms are reported. Results demonstrate that while mature P. aeruginosa biofilms contain active, growing cells, they can also harbor large numbers of cells that are inactive and not growing.

Removal and inactivation of Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilms by electrolysis

Article Abstract:

The effects of electrolysis on microbial biofilms formed by Staphylococcus epidermis are investigated. Results reveal that the treatment results in the removal of viable cells in the cathode and their inactivation though killing in the anode within a very short time.
