Article Abstract:
The MICRO-ID LISTERIA system of Organon-Teknika was evaluated. When used in combination with the CAMP test, 98.8% of the 414 Listeria isolates were correctly identified. The MICRO-ID LISTERIA system is easy to use and simple tointerpret. However, 8 of the 15 tests could be considered superfluous. The CAMPtest is indispensible for MICRO-ID LISTERIA usage. When tested on non-Listeria strains, 12 of 19 enterococci were misidentified as Listeria spp. Therefore, prior to MICRO-ID LISTERIA and CAMP identification, the isolates should be screened by Gram staining, catalase production and motility.

Article Abstract:
Strains belonging to the same serovar may be divided into two different groups on the basis of differences in inlA and inlB genes. This was gleaned from an investigation of whether a combination of polymerase chain reaction and restriction enzyme analysis can differentiate Listeria monocytogenes strains belonging to serovar 1/2a. One hundred strains of L monocytogenes serovar 1/2a from humans, animals, food and the environment were typed by a combination of the two methods, revealing that 70 of them shared one restriction profile while the remaining 30 strains shared the second one.

Article Abstract:
Seventy-two Listeria monocytogenes isolates obtained from 10 different fish products of 12 producers and 47 isolates from human listeriosis cases were typed by serotyping and multilocus enzyme electrophoresis. Findings revealed that several L. monocytogenes clones are often found in fish products from various sources. Comparison of L. monocytogenes isolates from human clinical listeriosis cases in Switzerland and those from imported fish products indicated that they do not form two clearly distinct lineages but nevertheless belong to two separate populations.
