Article Abstract:
A protocol to recover bacillus anthracis spores from a steel surface using macrofoam swabs was evaluated for its accuracy, precision, reproducibility and limit of detection. Macrofoam swabs recovered 31.7 to 49.1% of spores from 10-[cm.sup.2] steel surfaces with less than or equal to 32.7% coefficient of variation in sampling precision and reproducibility for inocula of greater than of equal to 38 spores.

Article Abstract:
The behavior of Bacillus anthracis Strene spores in sterile raw ground beef is measured at storage temperatures 2 to 70 degree centigrade, which has encompassed both bacterial growth and death. The inability of Bacillus anthracis to grow between 2 and 16 degree centigrade and inactivation at high temperatures might reduce the risk for recommended ground-beef handling and preparation procedures.

Article Abstract:
Three species of Bacillus were evaluated as potential surrogates for Bacillus anthracis for determining the sporicidal activity of chlorination as commonly used water treatment. Spores of Bacillus thuringiensis subsp. israelensis were found to be an appropriate surrogate for spores of Bacillus anthracis for use in chlorine inactivation studies.
