Evaluating hypotheses for the origin of eukaryotes

Article Abstract:

The different criteria used for evaluating the origin of the eukaryote cell by fusion or endosymbiosis between an archaeon and a bacterium are discussed. The analysis has concluded that the eukaryote lineage might have diverged from an ancestor of archaea prior to the origin of the mitochondrion and hence the absence of ancestrally amitochondriate eukaryotes among extant eukaryotes is neither evidence for an archaeal host for the ancestor of mitochondria, nor evidence against a eukaryotic host.

Meiosis and sex: Potent weapons in the competition between early eukaryotes and prokaryotes

Article Abstract:

The early evolution of meiosis, with its capacity for generating new favorable gene combinations, might have served to offset any of the competitive disadvantages. It is shown that meiosis and sex could have arisen in an asexually reproducing species and formed a clonal population.

Macroevolution of complex cytoskeletal systems in euglenids

Article Abstract:

Various studies are conducted to study the macroevolution of the complex cytoskeletal systems in euglenids that consist of a group of single-celled eukaryotes. The analysis also helps in explaining the early evolution and diversification of the eukaryotic life.
