Estimating the growth rate of slowly growing marine bacteria from RNA content

Article Abstract:

The correlation for four marine bacterial isolates grown in chemostats at four or five dilution rates, showed that all measures of RNA content such as RNA cell-1, RNA biovolume ratio, RNA:DNA ratio, RNA:DNA:biovolume ratio were very different among isolates. The RNA:DNA ratio was responsible for 94% of variance. When isolates were considered individually, the regression of (RNA:DNA)/(RNA:DNA) on mu was significant and almost identical for 3 of the 4 isolates, implying a common relationship between RNA content and growth rate. Cellular RNA content is a prospective indicator of growth rate for gradually growing marine bacteria.

Screening of nonfilamentous bacteria for production of cutin-degrading enzymes

Article Abstract:

A large number of nonfilamentous bacteria was screened for their ability to produce cutinase. A total of only three strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (1499A, K799 and DAR41352) showed cutinase activity, which was determined by a novel high performance liquid chromatography technique. Cutinase and esterase production by strains K799 and DAR41352 during the stationary phase were induced by the presence of cutin in the medium. The cutinase activity of strain 1499A was inhibited by the detergent n-octylglucoside.

Purification and characterization of a cephalosporin esterase from Rhodospirium toruloides

Article Abstract:

A research was conducted to study the purification of cephalosporin esterase from Rhodosporidium toruloides ATCC 10657 and its physical and biochemical properties. The esterase was released by fermentation broth treatment while the cell extract of of Bacillus subtilis was determined by cell sonication and removal of cell debris. Results showed that some amino acid sequences were found with eukaryotic lipases and esterases, especially around the putative active-site serine.
