Article Abstract:
The classical selective enrichment and molecular analyses are used for examining the diversity of indigenous bacteria in sediments from many sites in the Elizabeth River (Virginia) able to degrade multiple polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). The large collection of diverse PAH-degrading strains has provided a good resource for analyzing the mechanisms of PAH degradation and bioremediation.

Article Abstract:
The differences between benzene and toluene dioxygenases from Pseudomonas putida that is necessary for conversion of the substrate preference of benzene dioxygenase from benzene to alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons, such as toluene and ethylbenzene, are investigated. The activities of benzene, toluene and ethylbenzene are examined by an oxygen electrode assay.

Article Abstract:
A study was conducted on the role of autochthonous filamentous fungi isolated from an aged and heavily contaminated soil with aromatic hydrocarbons in assessing their degradative potential. It was observed that there was a significant decrease in soil toxicity due to the presence of autochthonous fungi.
