Energetics, thermoregulation and nocturnal hypothermia in Australian silvereyes

Article Abstract:

Energetics and thermoregulation of an Australian passerine referred to as the silvereye are examined. The study aims to determine if the Zosterops lateralis employs heterothermy to minimize energy use when faced with difficult environmental conditions. Findings reveal that silvereyes go through noctural hypothermia to reduce energy expenditures. This ability is assumed to boost their capacity to balance energy expenditure with the food resources available, thereby allowing them to adapt to adverse conditions and sudden changes in food availability.

Nutrient-reserve dynamics of breeding male wood ducks

Article Abstract:

The wood ducks' nutrient reserve dynamics are analyzed to determine if the males of the Aix sponsa species use endogenous fat and protein for reproductive energy. The male ducks in Alabama and Georgia were also studied for variations in prebasic molt and testis mass as related to their breeding status. The mass of the male ducks' carcass peaked in February and decreased during their mates' laying and incubation periods. Results showed that the male wood ducks depend much on lipid reserves for reproduction.

Circulating prolactin of incubating male Wilson's Phalaropes corresponds to clutch size and environmental stress

Article Abstract:

A study on circulating prolactin of incubating male Wilson's Phalaropes was conducted to measure the effect of clutch size changes on their levels of circulating prolactin. Results show that males with increased or decreased clutch size had lower levels of circulating prolactin as compared to control sample males. Furthermore, incubating male Wilson's Phalaropes undergo adaptive endocrine change when potential fitness of their clutch is affected.
